Kodiak is a sweet natured boy with a wonderful eye catching mask surrounding his soulful brown eyes. When he first came into rescue his coat looked pretty rough but that’s just because he was “blowing his coat” and shedding his thick undercoat in patches, as all Huskies do. With a little grooming he is now even more handsome.
He is very friendly to everyone he meets, presumably being starved for affection in his previous life. Kodiak is a lover just wanting to both give and receive affection and, if you let him, lick your face. He walks well on lead, until a cat or squirrel comes into sight; we were informed by the shelter that he is not cat friendly. Of course if other dogs come along he is very anxious to meet them. Kodiak is friendly with other dogs and enjoys playing with them. He gets very frisky when he is ready to play even if the other dogs do not show interest. We believe he is trying to convince them that it is play time.
Kodiak has a lot of young Husky energy yet has a balanced temperament for playtime, walks and just hanging around. We believe he spent most of his time outdoors as he spends a lot of time heading back to the door, even after he just came in. He is respectful of his alpha female foster sister and tries to “reason” with her at times, most often unsuccessfully. Kodiak is also adept at entertaining himself by tossing around stuffed toys or chewing on an antler and loves riding in the car.
Kodiak already knows the “sit” command, however, he still has work to do on his house manners being a counter surfer and somewhat “mouthy” when playing with humans. He responds well to correction so with some consistent guidance he is sure to become the perfect gentleman. He is currently being crate trained when left alone, so far without any issues, other than letting his foster family know that he is not happy. Once becoming part of a family very few Huskies need a crate, much preferring to be in the company of their humans.
He lives up to the Husky escape artist reputation and will try to dart out the door if he sees an opportunity. He will also explore the yard’s fence line looking for a way out; therefore, as with all Huskies, we do not recommend leaving him unattended for any period of time outside.
Kodiak is healthy, housebroken, heartworm negative, neutered, up-to-date on shots, and microchipped. This is one “huggable” boy; you’ll want him around you all the time. Make that happen, fill out an application at the upper left corner of this page, today.
